Advanced Interactive Realities Group - Research Projects
Medical Projects
The AIR group is researching in medical application areas such as the role of immersion in critical resuscitation skills training and virtual reality for rehabilitation after a stroke. In addition, medical imaging is being used as a teaching and learning tool, in collaboration with industry partners, and patient specific imaging for surgical planning is also under investigation.
Pure Research
Haptic research focuses on creating predictive mechanisms for movement in virtual environments, but also includes some more unusual interaction methods, such as physically augmented displays and the subsequent perception of combined real and virtual objects. This includes, as does the applied research, a focus on the experience of interacting with objects that do not exist. This latter topic is being considered at a more fundamental level, with a focus on presence determinants and the role of narrative in constructing virtual experiences.
